Theodor Geisel wrote dozens of beloved children's books under his pen name of Dr. Seuss. "The Cat in the Hat," "Green Eggs and Ham," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "The Lorax" are just a few. But many people don't realize that the good doctor had joined the U.S. Army in 1943. He was put in command of the animation department of the 1st Motion Picture Unit, which was created out of the Army Signal Corps.

On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, drawing the United States into World War II. The very next day U.S. Army troops requisitioned half of Walt Disney’s California studio for their use. But space was not all that Disney would provide the troops. Artists, animators and Walt Disney himself pitched in creating animated propaganda. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other beloved Disney characters were enlisted in the war effort.
