The Age of Enlightenment was an intellectual movement beginning in late 17th century Europe emphasizing logic and individualism rather than tradition. It spread across Europe and to the Americas. Its purpose was to reform society using reason to challenge ideas grounded in tradition and faith and to advance knowledge through the scientific method. The principal goals of the Enlightenment thinkers were liberty, progress, wisdom, tolerance, fraternity and ending the abuses of the church and state.
